Emma
Cook Bio
22 year old Emma Cook an alternative folk music artist was born and raised in Toronto and
has been singing for as long as she can remember. Coming from a
family of
musicians, she began formal singing lessons at the age of 10 and
continued until she was 19. Emma is a graduate of grade 9 voice
from
the Western Conservatory of Music.
With over 10 years of song-writing under her belt, Emma Cook has
honed her style and crafted her own original sound. Her songs
are extremely powerful and are complimented perfectly by her
distinct and intricate
guitar playing. Mainly self-taught, Emma's guitar playing
expresses her emotions almost as eloquently as her melodies and
lyrics.
The summer of 2003 saw the founding of Emmazing Records, Emma
Cook's
own
independent label which she used to release her debut album
"Manifesto." The stunning quality of the song-writing
and the beautiful dynamics of her voice really shine on this
record. The title track from the album, "Manifesto,"
has received radio play from
various radio stations including Waterloo's CKMS-FM and GidaFolk
Radio.
Emma Cook's alternative folk music lyrics are intelligent and outspoken, reflecting
her own strength and individuality, covering issues such as war,
women's issues, politics, sexuality, love and of course, fun!
The songs range from simple arrangements with guitar, voice and accordion, to more dynamic tunes with drums, bass, keys and
percussion.
After gigging extensively on Canada's East Coast, Emma has
returned to Toronto. She has headlined numerous shows in the
city,
including "Girls with Guitars" at C'est What, The
Winchester Pub and the "Manifesto" cd release at
Toronto's renowned folk club Hugh's
Room.
Emmazing Records recently held its very first Emmazing Women
benefit concert in Toronto, for the Redwood Women's Shelter. Emma
and the other female performers raised over $500 for the Shelter
and caused a huge buzz around the city.
Emma Cook's CD "Manifesto" has garnered fantastic reviews,
one of which is available at 1340mag.com. Emma was featured
artist in April's issue of the Female Musician Magazine @ www.femalemusician.com.
Visit their
site to read another great review. In April, the internet radio
station gida folk decided to do a two day special featuring
Emma's music. Tune
in to Gida Folk to hear Emma Cook in rotation and read a touching
review.
Due to the overwhelming success of the release of
"Manifesto," Emma has begun planning a Canadian tour
for 2004.
